Claude Code and Codex for non-programmers: what they are and why they matter if you don't write code
I am a film director and screenwriter. I do not write code. Even so, I work in Claude Code and Codex every day: they sort my mail, manage my calendar, gather research and keep my documents in order. Here is a plain explanation of what these programs are and why they matter to someone who works with text, people and projects.
A chat replies, an agent acts
In ChatGPT or Claude you ask a question and get an answer. After that you do everything yourself: copy, paste, send.
With an agent you give it a task. You write: "sort this week's inbox and put together a plan for tomorrow." It opens your mail itself, reads the messages, sorts them and brings you a finished plan. You check it and decide what to do with it.
Claude Code and Codex are two such agents.
What Claude Code is
A program made by Anthropic, the company behind Claude. You install it on your computer like any other application. It works with your files, browser, mail and calendar - whatever you give it access to. You set tasks in plain English, in your own words.
What Codex is
A program made by OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. You install it on your computer like any other application. It works with your files, browser, mail and calendar - whatever you give it access to. You set tasks in plain English, in your own words.
What they do for me
- sort my mail every morning and draft replies, which I send myself;
- add meetings to my calendar as soon as they appear in a conversation;
- gather research for screenplays and check facts;
- keep my folders and documents in order;
- prepare festival and lab submissions.
Participants in my intensives have used them to sort out Google Drive, send mailings to clients and put together presentations for property buyers.
What you need to get started
- A Mac or Windows computer. On Windows you will need the free Git for Windows program before installing.
- One paid subscription: Claude (the Pro plan) or ChatGPT (the Plus plan, which includes Codex). Check current prices on the official Claude and ChatGPT pages.
- You will not need the command line. Both agents understand English and reply in English. ChatGPT's menu is available in several languages; Claude's menu is in English only.
Claude Code or Codex: how to choose
In capability and design they are almost identical, and I run intensives on both. Choose based on the subscription you already have: if you pay for ChatGPT, use Codex; if you pay for Claude, use Claude Code.

What to worry about, and what not to
That the agent will break something. Before it deletes a file or installs a program, it asks for permission, and you set the rules for what it should not touch.
That it will send a message in your name. You can require your explicit go-ahead before anything is sent - that is how I work.
That it will get everything right. It makes mistakes, so its work needs checking. Where it went wrong for me, and what I did about it, is in the write-up on mail and calendar.
